Bui Vien Walking Street at Night: The Facts Before You Go
Bui Vien Walking Street is a pedestrian bar street in Ben Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, and the centre of the backpacker quarter locals call Phố Tây. It runs from the Tran Hung Dao and Nguyen Thai Hoc junction to Cong Quynh Street. Vehicles are kept off from 19:00 to 02:00 on weekend nights, and the bars open every night of the week.
Since the July 2025 administrative merger it sits in Ben Thanh Ward; older maps and guides still list it under Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1. It became a walking street on 20 August 2017. The original schedule kept vehicles out on Saturday and Sunday nights, and Tuoi Tre has described Friday nights as car-free too since 2019. Bui Vien crosses De Tham and Do Quang Dau Street, and the Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham and Bui Vien junction still goes by its old name, the International Crossroads (Ngã tư Quốc tế), from the decades when the area was full of print shops, newsrooms, theatres and cafés.

Bui Vien at Night: What It Is Really Like
In daylight, Bui Vien is an ordinary busy street of guesthouses, cafés and motorbikes. Once the barriers go up at 19:00 on weekend nights, low plastic stools fill the road, bar fronts compete with their speakers, vendors sell cups of stir-fried corn and other street snacks, and fire-breathing performers work the crowd. The music runs until about 02:00.
How you read it depends on what you came for. For a first night in Vietnam with a group of friends, it is easy, cheap fun. For a conversation, it is the wrong street: ZNews quoted a British visitor who came back after five years and left early because the bars were too loud and too close together. Our suggestion: treat Bui Vien as a one-hour stop rather than the whole night.

- Skip the nitrous oxide balloons. They are illegal, and Ben Thanh Ward police seized 348 cylinders on and around the street during an August 2025 crackdown.

The venue describes itself as “underground”, not in the physical sense, but in the sense that comedians are encouraged to go further than the mainstream circuit allows. Most shows are in Vietnamese, which means the funniest nights are the ones where the room is full of Vietnamese speakers who get every reference, but the physical comedy and timing translate across languages better than you’d expect.
